How did the Dermaroller come to be?
It’s an interesting looking medical device, and it can produce some amazing results. So how exactly was the Original German Dermaroller® created?
In a previous post, we’ve discussed the history of micro-needling. The research that started at Georgia Tech University in the 1990’s led the way in micro-needle design and technology. The design and creative genius behind the Original German Dermaroller® is German engineer and medical device inventor Dr. Horst Liebl, PhD. Originally looking to develop a tool that could micro-needle tissue and that would assist in transporting medications across the skin with little or no pain or side effects, Dr. Liebl developed a multi-needled drum shaped medical device that became the Original German Dermaroller® that is in use today.
Dr. Liebl’s research and work on micro-needling began with the establishment of his Clinic for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Stuttgart, Germany in 1983, where he devoted himself to the research and development of medical devices and the perfection of quality medical products.
After relocating to France, and having spent years in research and development, he finalized his engineering and design of the Original German Dermaroller® in 1999. Dr. Liebl integrated nearly 200 non-traumatic medical grade micro-needles into a drum shaped device. Designed to be rolled across the skin rather than the previous methods of single needle injections, the roller shaped design would make medical treatments quick and easy for healthcare practitioners. This was also a benefit to the patient as treatment time would be dramatically reduced and larger areas of skin could be treated in each session. Dr. Liebl named his invention the Dermaroller and it was patented and trademarked in 2000 in the EU.
Designed to be used as a painless, side effect-free, quick and easy means to provide treatment within the skin, the Original German Dermaroller® was put through clinical trials. The University of Marburg in Germany conducted two clinical trials in 2000 which confirmed that the Original German Dermaroller® was a safe, effective and pain-free means to induce collagen, elastin fibers and capillary growth in the skin.
Mercer University in Atlanta, Georgia and the University of Jena in Germany have also published several independent articles about the effectiveness of transdermal drug delivery with use of the Original German Dermaroller®. Recently studies published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Clinical and Experimental Dermatology have both confirmed that micro-needling with the Original German Dermaroller® has an immediate effect in improving acne scars.
Dr. Liebl, PhD continues to supply scientists, researchers, and medical schools throughout the world with the Original German Dermaroller®. He has held numerous lectures related to his tried and tested medical findings. Mr. Liebl leads the company’s research and development department in the French town of Friesenheim. Today the Original German Dermaroller® is distributed in over 50 countries worldwide.
